YAD Datin Paduka Prof. Dr. Jamilah Ariffin
As the President of JUITA, and Advisor to the social welfare council of Johor, Prof. Jamilah Ariffin has been responsible for establishing no less than 12 welfare projects within the state of Johor. Her program to implement 58 day care centers - one at every State Assembly constituency in Johor, has served over 1,800 intellectually disabled children, and awarded the Best Community Rehabilitation Project in Malaysia for 2 consecutive years. She was also responsible for successfully implementing a half way house for abused children and abandoned babies equipped with counseling and rehabilitation for these children in Trauma. In appreciation of her contributions toward social welfare in the state of Johor, Professor Jamilah was awarded Darjah Paduka Mahkota Johor (DPMJ).
In terms of service and contribution towards academia, Professor Jamilah has served for more than 30 years as a university professor in "Development Studies" and researcher in "Women and Development" at four local universities in Malaysia. She is at present Adjunct Professor of the Gender Studies Programme, University of Malaya.
Professor Jamilah has published 14 books and more than 40 academic research papers. Among her publications are :

Professor Jamilah is the first Malaysian to be selected by the Commonwealth Secretariat in London for the Commonwealth Expert Group to study the impact of Structural Adjustment which issued the important publication titled "Women and Structural Adjustment" in 1990.
Included in Professor Jamilah's extensive portfolio of service to Malaysian society, is as the main consultant for the Malaysian government in the United Nation's Beijing Women’s World Conference, Beijing China (1995) and published "The Status of Women in Malaysia".
Professor Jamilah was indirectly responsible for drafting and lobbying the first chapter on "Women and Development" for inclusion into the Sixth Malaysia Plan. This led to the creation of the Department of Women’s Affairs (HAWA) and subsequently, the Ministry of Women's Affairs.
Prof. Jamilah was also a board member of the Swiss Academy of Development in Switzerland comprising prominent Sociology professors in the world.
